The basic unit of Polish administrative division is a province (Voivodship) (currently there are 16 provinces in Poland) The head of a province is a provincial governor who, in a particular region, represents the government of Poland, and is the main representative of a particular region's central administration. Provincial governors are appointed by the Prime Minister upon the request of the Minister of Interior and Administration

Lower Silesian Governor's Office

Lower Silesian Governor's Office is the institution that enables the Governor of The Lower Silesia Province to perform and carry out the following tasks and duties:

- implement the policy of the Government, including the regional policy, with respect to the local conditions;
- control the activities of the governmental administration services (Police, Fire and Rescue services, Chief Education Officer, Regional Service for Historic Monuments Preservation etc.), and ensure these services proper conditions for efficient performance;

- ensure co-operation between the governmental administration and self-government in cases of natural disasters, threats to natural environment, national safety and civil rights;
- represent the Council of Ministers during national ceremonies and official visits paid by the representatives of foreign states;
- co-operate with the representatives of foreign states and international governmental and non-governmental organizations;
- supervise the activities of communes, counties and the province's self-government;
- handle activities concerned with appealing to The Supreme Administration Court and abide the terms of execution proceedings;
- realize the tasks concerned with the Program for the Odra River 2006
